2013 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the inception of competitive Men's Rugby in the Central Coast. In 1973 the first men's team was under the name Santa Cruz Seahawks. The Seahawks were nationally ranked however the team was short lived when the Seahawks migrated north to San Jose where the team still plays today. With the city without a rugby team, members from the old Seahawk club decided to rally together and create the Santa Cruz Rebels, where they competed against the Seahawks and teams up and down the bay of California. The rebels were very successful also becoming nationally ranked and attending playoffs where they would travel the country in order to compete. Couple years later the city of Monterey created a men's club and competed against the Rebels. It was not until 1996 where the two clubs merged and created the powerhouse team still known today as the Beachdogs. Two players from the Beachdog club went on to play on the international stage; Mike Fanucci and Alatini Saulala
